When a chapter was heavily revised the entire chapter is marked throughout with the symbol. Where one or more sections were deleted a * is placed between the remaining sections. NFPA* 88A Standard for Parking Structures 2019 Edition This edition of NFPA 8SA Stnad for Paig Srctes was prepared by the Technical Commitee n Gaages and Parking Strctures. It was issued by the Standards Council on May 4 2018 with an effective date of May 24 2018 and supersedes all previous editions. This edition of NFPA 88A was approved as an American National Standard on May 24 2018. Origin and Development of NFPA S8A Work on fire protection safeguards for garages was initiated by NFPA in 1927 with the apintment of a itee Aterxtensive dliberations an the publication of succesie drfs a standard was adopted in 1932. Suhsequently the mitee was discharged when it apeared that no further activity was eeded in this field. In 1952 the present mitee was created. This mittee prepared a number of redrafts of the 1932 text and in 1957 a revised NFPA 88 Standrd for Gernge was adopted. Revisions were made in 1962 1968 1979 1985 1995 and 1998. To treat separately the occupancies of repair garages and parking structures NFPA 88A and NFPA 88B Standand fo Repair Gerage were published separately in 1973. changes. The 199s edition contained definitions clarifying the vrious configurations of parking In 1991 partial revisions were made to this standard and the 1995 editin contained editorial structure and further clarified the requirements for vertical pening protection and automatic structures. It also contained changes increasing the area of office space related to the parking sprinkler installtion. That ediion also included new requirements for natural gas powered vehicles. Te 2002 edition contained primarily editorial revisons for liance with the Meml f Sy for NFPA Tchnical Cowmitz Docums and listed metric units of measurement as the primary units. In the 2007 edition the mitte rewrote the definition of opm porking scrto pl with the Mel f Siyir for NFPA Zchil Comitte Docmens and moved the requirements to a ne 4.7.1. The NFPA 220 definition of nonustibr matria/was adopted in place of the one used in the previous edition. Definitions were added to recogize the emergence of mhncl parking struts where cars are moved to parking places by lifts or other deices instead of being drien. No specifc requirements were added. Lastly the mittee clarified the use of vehicle ramps in 4.4.3 and 4.4.4. In the 2011 edition the mittee made a number of significant changes including the following: (1) Added new definitions (2) Defined and addressed aufomated mchanica-type parking struchusr in a new chapter (3) Reorganizd the entire document using a chapterstructure that emlates other constrction Deleted certain sections that were not enforceable (4) documents including but not limited to NFPA I01 and NFPA 5000 For the 2015 edition the changes that were mae consisted primarily of editorial alterations reference updates and clarifications of existing language. For the 2019 diio change include dding a definition fr odiz l clarifying languge in 5.2.1.1 and Section 5.5 replacing language that was omitted in error in the 2015 edition remoning the exception to 6.4.3 revising the exception to 6.6.2.1 adding references for NFPA 2 and AFPA 70in Section 7.1 and revising A.4.1.5 for consistency with NFPA 101.
