This edition of NFPA 1961 was approed as anAmerican National Standard on June 18 2012. Origin and Development of NFPA 1961 Standards on fire hose for both industrial use and fire department use were among the earliest standards issued by NFPA with the first standard issued in 1898. NFPA 196 was issued in 1934 as St Sefcti for Cotn Rd FHr Pic Prte F Dpl men Use That standard remained in existence until 1958 when the Fire Hose Committee was official stanard was issued in 1960 recognizing the neer synthetic materials that were being again constituted to upxdate the requirements. A tentative standard was issued in 1958 and the 2n. and 2% in sizes for single r multiple jacket hose and 3 in. and 3in. sizes for mltiple used in the manufacture of fire hose. The 1960 standard covered fire hose in the 1 in. 1%; in. jacket hose. In the 1972 edition the concept of single jacket relay supply hose in the trae sizesof 3 in. 4 in. 4% in. 5 in. and 6 in. was introduced. In 1979 the standard was renumbered from In the 1992 edition the term “rack and reel hose” was changed to“occupant use hose the spaeps sotas ang at go luusqumau qeaual e m apouoo o 1961 vd o 961 vd.N requirements for forestry hose were updated and the requirements for suction hose were added. The 1997 edition was a reconfirmation of the 1992 edition. The 2002 edition was pletely revised to conform to the Menul ofSle for NFPA Tchn cel Cowmittzr Dcuments to clean up ambiguous language and to clarify the requirements. Procurement-related isues were deleted from the requirements of the document and an equivaleny statement and a fomal retroactivity satement were added The minimum ra size requirement was dropped for all but supply hose. The requirements for specic lengths were changed to only require a tolerance on the stated nominal length. Positive presure requirements for hard suction hose were deleted. A cold resistance test was added for all hose. Specific requirements were added to test the hose for aasion resstance heat resistace water resstance egradatin from repeatd hending and degradation from alternating presures. The flexibility and presibility test method for forestry hose that had prevously referenced USDA Forest Senice specifications was stated in the standard. The chapter on inspection and tests was reorganized around four subject areas: quality control inspection testing and certification. The 2007 edition was a general upcdate of the 2002 edition and clarified ambiguous re- quirements. The section for testing longatin twist warp and rise was revised to clarify te four distinct tests. his edition also required all new fire hose to be marked ith the couty of origin. The 2013 edition of NFPA 1961 requires that the maximum friction los be within the requirements of ANSI/UL 19 Lined Fin Hose and Hs Asemlies It also requires that hose be marked with the manufacturer’s identification as well as the country of origin.
