PREFACE (This Preface is not part of ANSI/AISC 370-21 Specificarion for Strasctaral Stzinless Steel Baidings but is included for infomational purposes only.) This is the first edition of the Specification for Stractural Stzinless Steel Buildings. Similar to the AISC Specification for Srractueral Steel Bseildings ANSI/AISC 360-16 this Specifi- cation provides an integrated treatment of allowable strength design (ASD) and load and resistance factor design (LRFD). As indicated in Chapter B of the Specification designs can be made according to either ASD or LRFD provisions. There are a wide array of stainless steel types available for structural applications. The properties of stainless steels differ significantly from the properties of the steels covered in the AISC Specificarion for Stracfaral Steel Buildings. That specification is not appropriate for the design and fabrication of structural stainless steel. Prior to this Specification there was no specification for the use of stainless steel in building structural applications. The first edition of AISC Design 27 Stractura/ Stainless Steel provided some guidance on the design and fabrication of structural stainless steel buildings; that design guide is being updated and the second edition will serve as a panion to AISC 313-21 and ANSI/AISC 370-21. This ANSI-approved Specification has been developed as a consensus document using ANSI- accredited procedures to provide a uniform practice in the design of structural stainless steel-framed buildings and other structures. The intention is to provide design criteria for routine use and not to provide specific criteria for infrequently encountered problems which occur in the full range of structural design. This Specification is the result of the consensus deliberations of a mittee of structural engineers with approximately equal numbers in private practice in research and testing and employed by stainless steel fabricating and producing panies. The Symbols Glossary Abbreviations and Appendices to this Specification are an integral part of the Specification. A nonmandatory Commentary has been prepared to provide back- ground for the Specification peovisions and the user is encouraged to consult i.
